Visiting disney's animal kingdom in Orlando

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a combination of a traditional theme park and zoo, featuring a wide variety of animal species and immersive experiences throughout the various lands. Visitors can experience animal encounters and live entertainment including Festival of the Lion King, and Finding Nemo

The park’s icon, the Tree of Life is a 145-foot art sculpture featuring approximately 325 carvings depicting an assortment of extinct and existing animal species.

Five lands are located centrally around Discovery Island and are reached via bridges over Discovery River, the entrance to Animal Kingdom is located at Oasis land. The park is located on the western edge of Walt Disney Resort and to minimise disruption and upset to the animals there are no firework displays. 

Be aware Animal Kingdom can be affected by the weather conditions as many of the park’s attractions are located outdoors, it can also get extremely hot. We suggest checking the weather forecast before deciding to visit the park to avoid disappointment. Be aware the transport links to Animal Kingdom are limited, Disney transport available to and from the resorts is by bus, or Minnie Van Services.

This area is the most expansive section of Animal Kingdom, with Africa’s entrance located in the imaginative port of Harambe. Harambe acts as the entry point to the African savanna environment and features a marketplace, several dining options, a bakery, gift shops, and various entertainment offerings.

Access to the African savanna is via the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction at the end of Harambe’s main street. Harambe is also the departure point for the train to Conservation Station, and Rafiki’s Planet Watch.

Festival of the Lion King 

An amazing and exciting stage show full of colour celebrating the classic animated movie The Lion King. With some of the film’s most popular music and song along with flamboyant dance routines, costumed characters, and acrobats.

The spacious, climate-controlled amphitheater can accommodate 1,500 guests on tiered benches that encircle the stage. For the best view of the performance, aim for a seat higher up. Keep in mind that this show is extremely popular, and midday performances often attract long lines.

Kilimanjaro Safaris 

Experience an unforgettable safari adventure at the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. Climb aboard our open-air safari trucks and explore 110 acres of stunning landscapes, including savannahs, lakes, streams, rocky areas, and watering holes. You’ll have the chance to observe a diverse range of animal and bird species in their natural environment.

The best times to view the wildlife is early in the morning or late afternoon when the animals are more active.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail 

View lowland gorillas at your own pace whilst taking a self-guided tour around this lush tropical rainforest trail. As you wander, you’ll encounter huts featuring informative displays and observation points, an aviary filled with exotic birds, and a hippo pool that offers an underwater viewing experience. Continuing along, you’ll find the African grasslands exhibit, home to antelopes, gazelles, and curious meerkats.

The highlight of the trail is the troop of lowland gorillas, a family of silver backs can be seen through a glass viewing area, and more adolescent male gorillas can be observed at the open-air viewing area and from the suspension bridge. Along the trail Disney experts are on hand to answer any questions and give useful information if required.

Rafiki’s Planet Watch 

Wildlife Express Train 

The Wildlife Express Train operates at different times throughout the day, taking guests to and from Rafiki’s Planet Watch. While riding this charming train, you can catch a glimpse of the nighttime habitats of the animals from Kilimanjaro Safaris. You’ll pass by Tembo House, home to the elephants, before pulling into the station.

Be aware that the Wildlife Express Train opens 30 minutes after the rest of the Animal Kingdom and the last daily train departs from Harambe Station at 4:30pm.

Rafiki’s Planet Watch consists of 3 areas:

Conservation Station 

At the Animal Kingdom’s veterinary and conservation center, you have the chance to meet wildlife specialists and witness the care and surgical procedures for injured animals. You can also see how their meals are prepared and catch a glimpse of fascinating creatures like tarantulas, scorpions, and snakes.

You can also find a range of interactive displays and touch screens that let you observe different animals through video links scattered throughout the park.

Habitat Habit! 

A small, shaded animal trail exhibit connecting the train station to the Conservation Station. The trail can be taken at your own pace but can become busy at times when the train drops passengers off.

Affection Section 

A petting zoo with various animals including some exotic breeds of pigs, goats, sheep, deer, llamas etc. There is an area to wash little hands after interacting with the animals.

The land of Asia is filled with beautiful scenery, lakes, rapids, and amazing treks. Showcasing animals from throughout the continent and also thrilling attractions including Expedition Everest at 200 feet the highest “mountain” in Florida, and Kali River Rapids. 

Guests enter the kingdom of Anandapur bustling with restaurants, cafes, kiosks, and gift shops. Mixed with crumbling stone temples and ancient ruins, perfume gardens, bright pagodas and Everest looming up in the distance capped with snow. This is a wondrous land filled with fascination. 

Rides and Attractions 

Expedition Everest 

One of Disney’s best and immensely popular roller coasters with spectacular views. A great fun packed ride through the mountain and up to base camp on an old rickety train. 

The ride features a two-way track system that takes guests forward up to the broken twisted train tracks, then backward whilst being attacked by the mythical yeti guarding the “forbidden mountain.” 

This is a great attraction for all the family with tight turns and dips but without loops or inversions. Be aware the ride may be a bit frightening for younger children.

Kali River Rapids 

View amazing scenery, rainforest, waterfalls, and crumbling temples whilst riding down the Kali River Rapids.

The journey starts in the queueing area which winds along a path passing ruins, shrines, and remnants of statues in lush landscaping, then on through an Asian temple decorated with intricate carvings and murals. 

Guests then board circular rafts each capable of seating 12 passengers, featuring a waterproof compartment to keep belongings dry.

The raft ascends a steep slope before drifting gently downstream through the vibrant rainforest, navigating over rapids and past waterfalls, and gliding by a logging camp with charred stumps that illustrate the devastation of the rainforest, before returning to Anandapur.

Be aware you will get wet on this attraction so be prepared, wear a rain poncho, or bring extra clothing to change into.

Feathered Friends in Flight 

A live theatre show featuring a variety of free-flying birds and hosted by Disney’s animal behaviour specialists who explain the different bird species their habitats and characteristics. 

The show is entertaining and informative and great for the whole family. If you are looking to get some good photos of the birds it is advisable to arrive 20 minutes before showtime to get a seat in the front centre area.

Be aware although the theatre is covered it is not air-conditioned an early morning or late afternoon performance might be more comfortable.

Maharaja Jungle Trek 

Located near the entrance to Kali River Rapids this is a trek where you can see a variety of animals and exotic birds in an Asian setting the wildlife is the main attraction but take time to look at the amazing surroundings. At the entrance be sure to pick up a brochure that describes the wildlife found here and some viewing tips as well. 

Begin by walking through the Anandapur Royal Forest and the crumbling palace ruins past Komodo dragons and Malayan flying foxes. Guests can stop at various viewing platforms and areas along the route and see a variety of wildlife. 

Then on to the Tiger Forest set in the ruins of the maharajah’s palace here there is another viewing area from the top of the parapet where you can catch a glimpse of antelope and deer. Further down the path you will enter the Mughal-style mausoleum known as the “Red Pavilion.” Here you can see a wide variety of birds some tree dwellers, others ground or mud dwellers.

A land dedicated to Dinosaurs after crossing the bridge from Discoveryland enter DinoLand U.S.A. under a 50-foot tall skeleton of a Brontosaurus and find yourself in the archaeological dig site of the Dino Institute and journey back to when the dinosaurs ruled the earth 65 million years ago. 

Be aware DinoLand will be replaced at some point in 2024.

The Boneyard 

A great children’s playground themed on a dinosaur dig and populated with various dinosaur skeletons. There are ropes, slides, swings, tunnels, and caves to explore and some interactive displays to play with. Young archaeologists can play in a sandbox where faux remains of dinosaur bones are buried waiting to be found. There is a shaded seating area located close by for where adults can wait while their children play.

Finding Nemo: The Big Blue and Beyond! 

Located at the Theatre in the Wild on the boarder of DinoLand. This Theatrical show retells the story of Finding Nemo through a combination of amazing effects as well as puppetry, colourful costumes, dance, and animated backdrops creating an entertaining undersea spectacular.

The performance is held in a comfortable, air-conditioned theater that offers ample seating. However, since this is a highly sought-after event, it’s a good idea to arrive 20-25 minutes early to secure a great spot.

TriceraTop Spin 

Similar to the Dumbo ride at Magic Kingdom with this ride Triceratops spin around a central hub, the dinosaur cars can seat up to 4 people in two rows and each row has a control lever, the rear lever tilts the car forward and backward and the front lever allows you to raise the arm up and down. The ride concludes when all of the dinosaurs are at their highest, great fun for younger children.

Dinosaur 

Time travel to the era of the dinosaur on this epic dino ride, here your mission is to locate and bring back a living dinosaur to the present date before being wiped out by the meteors that are due to collide with the earth. 

The queue begins at the entrance to the Dino Institute and winds past interesting fossils, lab notes and photographs with dialog from Bill Nye. Guests will have a briefing from Dr Helen Marsh who introduces you to the Time Rover – your transportation to the past a 12 seater vehicle. 

The thrilling ride features amazing visuals with plenty of bucking, twisting, and pitching movements to the simulations and effects. The ride can be frightening for younger children and is even a bit startling for some adults.

Discovery Island is the central hub of Disney’s Animal Kingdom surrounded by the Discovery River. From Discovery Island bridges cross the Discovery River and link the other lands clockwise Asia, DinoLand U.S.A., Oasis, Pandora – The World of Avatar, Africa.

The impressive Tree of Life with its intricate detailed carvings is located here and is visible throughout the park.

Wilderness Explorers 

An interactive scavenger hunt where players earn badges for completing activities throughout the park. Self-guided activities range from animal observation to learning important wilderness skills. 

At each land there are a number of badges to earn, totalling over 25. Pick up your instructions and Explores guidebook from the bridge connecting Oasis to Discovery Island or at Wilderness Explorers locations around the park, then start the hunt.

It’s Tough to be a Bug!

Guests waiting for the show at the Tree of Life can stroll along a path that winds around the beautifully detailed trunk of the tree, taking in the stunning carvings.

Housed within the Tree of Life is the amazing theatre showing “It’s Tough to be a Bug!” a 4-D movie and audio-animatronic experience on the survival techniques of bugs. After being seated in the 430-seat theatre guests don their 3D glasses and the performance begins.

The show features tactile and visual special effects some of which may frighten smaller children. Be aware the queueing area is mostly unshaded.

Located behind the Tree of Life you’ll find a serene space filled with pools, meadows, and trees, perfect for a leisurely stroll along multiple trails.

Whilst walking visitors have opportunities to see various animals including otters, kangaroos, lemurs, tortoise, and an abundance of birdlife. The area is beautifully landscaped with waterfalls and quiet spots to unwind, providing a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of the park.

Meet Favourite Disney Pals at Adventure Outpost 

Meet Micky Mouse and Minnie Mouse wearing their safari outfits at their indoor, air-conditioned exploration headquarters. The rooms are decorated with photographs of the pairs adventures and items relating to their trips.

Tree of Life Awakenings

A projection show awakens the tree with an amazing lightshow projected onto the tree’s trunk and branches. Music and special effects combine to create a mesmerising show as the carved animals appear to come alive. This is an evening experience shown every 10 minutes until the park closes.

Oasis

Oasis is located at the entrance to Animal Kingdom a jungle of tropical plants banana trees, bamboos and exotic flowers, trickling waterfalls, and ponds with freshwater fish and beautiful birds, flamingos, Scarlet Ibis, and Spoonbills. 

Before entering Oasis on the left as you walk through the main entrance is the Rainforest Café a large building with a waterfall cascading over one side, this is an amazing dining experience themed on a tropical rainforest. Oasis also provides guests with numerous services including storage lockers, and wheelchair, stroller, and ECV rentals at Garden gate gifts.

Oasis Exhibits

Walking on one of the trails through the lush landscape into Oasis (all lead on to Discovery Island), you may encounter barking dear, iguana, giant anteater, macaws, and more wildlife. Viewing areas are dotted along the way so you can stop and see if you can spot something unusual! Disney cast members are on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Inspired by James Cameron’s film Avatar the area immerses guests into the enchanting landscapes of planet Pandora there are huge floating mountains, waterfalls, flowing streams, exotic plants, and beautiful trees.

With stunning visuals and detailing guests can explore the land whilst encountering alien lifeforms and interact with the Na’vi people indigenous to Pandora. After dark, the land comes to life with bioluminescent forests and plant life.

Na’vi River Journey 

This is a journey in search of the Shaman of Songs. Guests float on reed boats down a gentle river through caves and into dark jungle with exotic bioluminescent glowing plants flowers and Pandoran creatures that seem to follow you on your journey. 

In the distance you can hear music being played by the Shaman an incredible animatronic figure who, with her musical ceremony tells of the sacred bond between nature, the Na’vi and humans.

Avatar Flight of Passage 

Become a Na’vi hunter and ride on the back of a winged dragon like banshee on a thrilling 3D aerial adventure over Pandora’s valleys. 

The journey begins by trekking uphill around large root systems above waterfalls to cave dwellings, then through jungle habitat to reach the research laboratory. Here you are prepared for your flight, in the genetic matching room you are scanned, and genetic material is sampled to connect you to your avatar. 

Guests then don the 3D goggles and straddle a single seat simulator (similar to a motorcycle). Then the flight begins. Similar to Soarin’ at EPCOT where you swoop and glide above the land. This is a magical experience with the sensation of flying, including sensory effects such as smells and airflow. Be aware the seating and restraints of the ride vehicle may prohibit guests of certain body shapes from riding.

There are a number of small dining rooms on two levels with plenty of seating. Offering a fusion of Pan-Asian cuisine the menu has a variety of options including small plates and shareables, food from the wok and grill and speciality items. The Kobe beef burger may be the choice for a fussy eater but comes highly recommended.

Lunch and dinner menus have good portions of speciality foods including Korean fried chicken sandwich, teriyaki chicken salad, vegetable tikka masala and more Asian delights, as well as smaller bites. The cafes have seating around the back with umbrellas for shade. Be aware the counter service restaurant can get busy during peak dining times.

Anandapur Ice Cream Truck 

Sat near the bank of the Discovery River is this great looking highly decorated old truck serving as an ice cream kiosk. With an assortment of cooling ices welcome on a sweltering day in the park. The menu is limited but includes soft-serve waffle cones, Yeti sundaes, and floats (with choice of a fountain drink) as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The artwork on the sides of the truck is worth seeing alone.

Thirsty River Bar 

A bar kiosk serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, popcorn, and pretzels. Speciality fun cocktails such as Himalayan Ghost, Yeti Sunset and Avalanche Frozen Blue Margarita can also be purchased.

The Thirsty River Bar is a great spot to grab a drink before or after visiting Expedition Everest.

A quirky counter service restaurant with lots of fun décor.

Restaurantosaurus boasts a variety of themed dining spaces inspired by student palaeontologists who transformed their residence into a dining establishment. The interior features lofty wooden ceilings, with one room showcasing impressive dinosaur skulls and an array of bones adorning the walls, while another area is designed like a gymnasium, complete with an Airstream at one end where families can enjoy a meal and play music on a jukebox.

Outside, there is ample seating under umbrellas for those who prefer al fresco dining. The menu offers a wide selection of classic American dishes at reasonable prices, including options for those seeking plant-based meals.

Eight Spoon Café 

Tucked around the corner from the Tree of Life before crossing the bridge to Asia is the small kiosk, Eight Spoon Cafe. The menu here changes quite frequently but usually has some tasty unique snack options at reasonable prices, including the favourite baked macaroni and cheese with pulled pork, and the mouthwatering pulled pork jelly doughnut sandwich served with Coleslaw!

Flame Tree Barbecue 

A popular restaurant with lovely seating areas located behind where you can sit in shaded areas along the water’s edge or next to a trickling fountain with magnificent views of Expedition Everest in the distance. A great option for families with plenty of options to choose from on the menu at a reasonable price.

A signature dining experience awaits at Tiffins, with a beautiful ambiance, elaborate décor, and artwork on the walls and in display cabinets. There are three elegant dining areas each with a different theme which guests are encouraged to explore, Trek Gallery, the Grand Gallery this is the biggest dining room, and the Safari Gallery. A varied menu serves a mixture of Asian, and South African dishes. Altogether Tiffins is in the perfect location, with an amazing calming ambience and unique menu, a great place to dine.

Small bites are available here before you dine at Tiffins Restaurant, or you could order several plates from the menu for lunch or dinner, although beware the small plates are quite expensive.

The menu features an assortment of alcoholic and non- alcoholic cocktails, beers, and lagers from around the world. Freshly ground coffee and loose leaf teas are also available along with great fresh tasting food including Tuna Poke Bowls, Korean Barbeque Mushroom Bao Buns, Bangkok Chicken Wings and more.

Oasis 

Rainforest Café 

Located on the edge of Animal Kingdom just after the main entrance on the left, and before entering Oasis the Rainforest Café is a large building with a waterfall cascading over one side. The entrance is through a gift shop featuring Rainforest themed merchandise. The Mushroom bar is on the left as you walk into the dining area and has great animal themed barstool’s.

With a great atmosphere the Rainforest Café is an extraordinary dining experience, set in a lush tropical rainforest with animatronic animals and the occasional sound of thunderstorms and tropical animals. The ceiling of the restaurant is covered in foliage, birds, and other tropical creatures as well as a view of the starlit sky. 

The extensive menu offers a wide variety of American and tropical dishes, ensuring there’s something for everyone to savor. From juicy burgers and fresh seafood to vibrant salads and delicious pasta, diners will find plenty of options to delight their taste buds.

You don’t need to enter the Animal Kingdom to enjoy a meal here, as this dining spot is located just outside the park’s borders.

Satu’li Canteen 

Located on the far side of Pandora, adjacent to Pongu Pongu and the Windtraders gift shop. Serving as the main dining location in Pandora – The World of Avatar. The Satu’li Canteen has a peaceful feel, themed on an RDA (Resources Development Administration) mess hall turned into a canteen, with Na’vi artwork and cultural items and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. 

The menu has healthy dishes created from Pandora’s natural environment as well as cuisine with an international flavour and a unique drinks menu. Items include fresh tasting create-your-own bowls, including a protein, (chicken, beef, fish, or tofu), a base, (potato, noodles, rice and beans and salad) and sauce, as well as Cheeseburger Steamed Pods – Bao Buns and a variety of children’s meals. This is a very popular dining experience, with fresh food and highly rated by visitors.

A small but interesting gift shop selling Asian inspired items including decorative umbrellas, musical instruments, decorative kites, carved masks and windchimes as well as snacks and beverages.

Serving as Expedition Everest gift shop selling a wide selection of the attractions merchandise including Himalayan styled clothing, toys, souvenirs, and gifts including the Yeti plush and Disney pins.

Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures

Themed on a roadside gas station converted into a dinosaur gift shop, selling pre-historic themed toys, clothing, plush and much more dinosaur related merchandise. This fun shop is worth visiting just for its amazing décor, with its floor to ceiling dino and gas station memorabilia including mobiles, posters, parachuting dinosaurs and much more. A great shop to visit when in DinoLand U.S.A. 

The Dino Institute Shop

A shop selling everything Dinosaur related, skeletons, fossils, plush, books, and clothing. Located next to the entrance to Dinosaur and serves as the attractions exit gift shop.  

Discovery Island 

Island Mercantile

A large, open spaced gift shop located near the Tree of Life selling a wide variety of Disney merchandise including Disney pins, clothing, headgear, plush, camera and media as well as snacks. Themed on working animals and creatures you may notice beavers, camels, elephants and even ants located throughout the store. 

Discovery Trading Company

Located opposite Island Mercantile selling a large assortment of souvenirs, t-shirts, toys, plush, food, MagicBands, accessories and more. 

Oasis 

Garden Gate Gifts

A gift shop located at the entrance to Animal Kingdom selling MagicBands, photographic products and a small selection of Disney merchandise and plush. The main reason to visit here is to rent wheelchairs ECV (Electric Conveyance Vehicles), and strollers before setting off into the park. 

Pandora – The World of Avatar 

Windtraders

Discover the unique gift shop in Pandora, where you’ll find a wide range of exotic Avatar-themed items, gifts, and souvenirs, along with art and collectibles. Plus, for a more personalized touch, guests can create a custom Na’vi action figure that reflects their own features.

By having your face scanned and choosing a variety of body types, hair styles and various other options your avatar will be created in a state-of-the-art ACE Avatar Maker Fabricator. Prices range from $75.

There is no need to make a reservation for the experience just visit the ACE Avatar Maker booth located inside Windtraders. 

 

FAQs on Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is situated in Berkshire in the South of England. It is in the town of Windsor which is twinned with Eton by the River Thames. The average journey times from London are around 60-90 minutes by coach and around an hour by train.

You can use one of the many tour operators from London and have all your travel needs taken care of for you. You can also travel independently from London by train using either Paddington or Waterloo main line stations to Windsor.

Windsor Castle can be traced back to the 11th century with building work starting on the Castle around 1070.
