An average of 25% on tolls can be saved using SunPass.

E-ZPass

E-ZPass has been the most convenient toll system operating along the east coast of the United States and is managed by the EZPass Interagency Group (IAG). If you want to obtain a dedicated E-ZPass you will need to decide which state to register it in as this will be the primary state your E-ZPass will be linked with. Be aware that any benefits of an E-ZPass will generally apply to the state it was registered with and may be subject to the regular cash rate tolls when travelling through different east coast states of the United States. For your information, the E-ZPass is available throughout the state of Florida.

How does E-ZPass work?

First you will need to create an E-ZPass prepaid account with one of the participating agencies. Once you have set up your account you will be sent a transponder that attaches to the inside of your vehicles windscreen. When travelling through a toll facility an antenna will read your transponder and your account will be debited the appropriate toll fee.

How much does E-ZPass cost?

The cost of an E-ZPass vary between states. The device normally costs less than $20 in some states the transponder is free.

E-ZPass cost by State 2024:

Florida $19.70

Delaware $15

Indiana $15

Kentucky $15

North Carolina $13.49

West Virginia $13

Maine $10.55

Illinois $10

Rhode Island $10

New Hampshire $7.50

(prices correct as of may 2024)

What’s the difference between E-Pass and E-ZPass?

Although E-Pass and E-ZPass are both electronic collection systems used on toll roads, bridges, and expressways in the United States, E-Pass is primarily used in the state of Florida and provides discounts and compatibility with other toll systems such as SunPass and E-ZPass. E-ZPass is used in several states across the eastern, midwestern, and southern areas of the United States and is ideal for travellers crossing multiple states due to its extensive network and geographic coverage. Both systems are served by different agencies and are not interchangeable.

Toll-By-Plate

Toll-By-Plate or Pay By Plate is for those motorists who do not wish to use SunPass, E-Pass or any other toll paying transponder system. With Pay By Plate a photo of your license plate is captured when you pass through the toll plaza. Then a fee is generated of any tolls incurred over a 30 day period and mailed to the vehicles owner including an administrative fee which at this time is $2.50.

Be aware Toll-By-Plate cannot be used on Florida managed lanes, if you travel in a managed lane without a SunPass, E-PASS or other accepted transponder, you will be subject to a $25 daily violation charge.

Ride Sharing

Uber, & Lyft

Offering rideshare services throughout the city. You can use the Uber and Lyft app to request a ride. and it’ll connect you with nearby drivers who can pick you up and take you to your destination. The app also provides fare estimates, allows you to track your ride in real-time, and offers assorted options such as shared rides or premium services, depending on your preferences.

Wingz

Wingz is another transportation service that operates similarly to rideshare companies like Lyft and Uber but with a focus on pre-scheduled rides to and from airports and other locations. Wingz may have options available for trips within Orlando, but their primary emphasis is on airport transportation and pre-scheduled rides. You can book a ride through their website or mobile app.

Note Ride sharing can get expensive when ordered at peak times of the day as companies put up prices, this can happen when there are more ride requests than available drivers. For example, at the end of the firework displays at Disney World there will be more demand so waiting times may be longer. Trips from airports are subject to a surcharge.

Be aware if travelling with young children a child a car seat may not be available in the vehicle.

Taxis

taxi

Taxies are a comfortable though expensive way of getting around. Orlando is served by a collection of independently owned taxi and private shuttle companies; however, Orlando taxis and shuttle fares are not pre-set by the State, and therefore they will vary from company to company. Moreover, taxis in Orlando are not allowed to charge a flat rate, they will always be metered (except if they are a private shuttle company). This metered price includes an initial fee, an airport charge (if travelling from the airport), and a per-mile rate. Taxicabs are becoming increasingly scarce due to Uber and Lyft ride hailing services, though you can still hail a taxi in front of most hotels, resorts, and major attractions.

It is customary to tip your Orlando taxi driver. No matter what type of vehicle is used, the standard tip for a local taxicab driver in the Orlando area is 15 % to 20% of the total fare. All Orlando taxis accept payment by credit card, however, they do prefer cash payments, when possible.

Be aware not all taxis or private shuttles are wheelchair accessible in Orlando. Contact the company to check in advance.
